Gift guide
First Christmas together gifts for him or her
The best first Christmas together gift fits where the two of you are: a few months in, a first year under one roof, or a first Christmas married. The ideas below are sorted by those three. Each one says whether you can do it today or need to order and ship it, with a rough budget band: free, low, moderate or higher. Most need nothing from us; one is ours.
If you just started dating
A few weeks or months in, aim for thoughtful, not big. A small gift that shows you listen beats an expensive one that feels like pressure.
A small gift tied to something they said
The book they mentioned, the hot sauce from the place you went, a new mug to replace the one they chipped. Small, specific and clearly about them.
How to do it: Scroll back through your messages for something they wanted or loved, then buy it locally if you can.
A winter date instead of a present
Ice skating, a walk through a lights display, a holiday market or a Christmas movie at an old cinema. Time together is the gift.
How to do it: Pick the date, book anything that needs a ticket and hand them a note with the plan.
Homemade cookies or their favorite treat
A batch of something they like, or the recipe your family makes every December, packed in a tin.
How to do it: Add the recipe on a card so they can make it again.
A note inside a book you love
A book that mattered to you, with a few lines on the first page about why you wanted them to read it.
How to do it: Keep the note short and personal; the inscription is what makes it a gift.
If it's your first Christmas living together
Your first Christmas under one roof is about the traditions you start. Things for the home you share, or things you do together, tend to stick.
Pick your first tree together
A real tree from a lot or a farm, or a small potted one, chosen and decorated together.
How to do it: Make it an outing: hot drinks, a playlist and a photo of the two of you with the tree.
A first Christmas ornament with this year on it
You'll hang it every year. A plain glass ornament with your names and the year written on it works as well as a custom one.
How to do it: Personalized ornaments are usually made to order, so check the seller's own delivery estimate before you buy. A paint pen and a plain ornament can be done tonight.
Something for the home you share
A good throw blanket, two matching mugs, a framed photo for the hallway, a plant for the window.
How to do it: Choose something you'll both use every day, not just look at.
Cook your first Christmas dinner together
Pick one dish from each of your families and make them side by side.
How to do it: Write the menu on a card and keep it; it becomes the first page of your own recipe file.
If it's your first Christmas married
The wedding year gave you plenty to work with: vows, photos, a first home. Keep the gift about the year, not the price.
Your vows, printed and framed
The words you said to each other, set in a simple layout and framed for the bedroom or the hallway.
How to do it: Type them up, print them at home on heavy paper and frame them today. A custom print from a shop has to be ordered and shipped.
A photo book of your wedding year
The engagement, the wedding and the first months married, in order, with one line under each photo.
How to do it: Photo books usually take several days to print and ship, so order early.
A letter to open next Christmas
What surprised you this year, what you're proud of, what you hope next year brings. Seal it and date it for next December.
How to do it: Write one each and open both together next Christmas Eve.
For any of the three
Two ideas that work whether you've been together three months or three years.
A Christmas morning photo trail
Photos of your year together hidden around your home in order, from the first one to the most recent; the last photo leads to the gift.
How to do it: Print them at home the day before and number the backs so you hide them in the right order.
Your year together as a short animated film
Twelve of your photos together, each redrawn in a style you pick and brought to life as a 1-minute film that opens with your names and closes on a line you write, like "Merry Christmas".
How to do it: Add your photos to Once Upon Us, see your first scene free before you pay and check every scene before it comes to life. A 1-minute film is $24.99. Scenes are usually drawn within 30 minutes, so it still works on Christmas Eve. Print the QR card for under the tree (steps below). See the Christmas film
How to put the film under the tree
Every Once Upon Us film comes with a printable card: your names, the month and year you got together, and a QR code that opens the film. Here's how to turn it into something to unwrap.

- When your film is ready, open your private film page and choose "Print a QR card".
- Choose "Print it" to print straight from the card screen, or save the card image and print it later. Heavy paper or card stock feels most like a real card.
- Scan the printed code with your phone before you wrap it, to make sure it opens your film.
- Trim along the border, slip the card into an envelope and put it under the tree or in a stocking.
- Your film page is kept for 30 days, so make the film within a month of Christmas, and download the film to keep it for good.

Example frames in three of the six styles. Your film is drawn from your own photos.
Made with you, scene by scene. Add your photos, pick your characters and see your first scene free before you pay, then check each scene before it comes to life.

What should I get my boyfriend for our first Christmas together?
Something that shows you pay attention: a small gift tied to something he mentioned, a winter date you planned, or, if you've been together a while, your year as a short film made from your photos. If it's very new, keep it small.
What should I get my girlfriend for our first Christmas together?
Something about the two of you rather than something off a shelf: a note inside a book you love, a first ornament with this year on it, or a photo trail on Christmas morning that ends at her gift.
How much should I spend on a first Christmas together gift?
There's no rule. Early on, a small, thoughtful gift is safer than an expensive one, and several ideas here are free or low cost. What matters is that it's about them, or about your year.
What's a good gift for your first Christmas married?
Something from the wedding year: your vows framed, a photo book of the year, a letter to open next Christmas, or your first year as a short film with a QR card under the tree.
